Default Vista & GW in XP Compatibility Mode

I'm thinking about buying a new laptop (special offers for it look nice), but it only offers Vista. I don't want to go with a different laptop that still offers XP; I've already looked through those. I already know that GW doesn't support Vista and have done a search to see which issues people have been posting about, but I only remember one of the threads even mentioning XP Compatibility Mode.

Are people running GW with Vista having issues running it without compatibility mode? Are people still having issues with GW even after running it in compatiblity mode?

From what I've found, it seems like I'd need to run GW in full screen, but that doesn't work out too well on a widescreen computer :/. I'm hoping that the specs below would work out too...

HP dv6500t
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.00 GHz)
2GB (2 Dimm) RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS (383 MB)

Just curious, where did you hear that GW doesn't work on Vista? I've been running GW with absolutely no problems for the last 5 months on Windows Vista HP. And I suppose it might work in compatibility mode, but there isn't any reason to.

It's not that it doesn't work with Vista, it's just that ANet doesn't support running GW on Vista; I read it on the support site a while ago. People on here also seem to have had a few issues too.

It's nice to know that you're not having issues with it. What are the specs on your computer?

GW works just fine on Vista machines...five months and not a single issue. I've only had and occasional random disconnect...but that didnt start up until after they disabled reconnects...

Intel Pent D 3.2GHz
2Gig Ram
BFG 7950 GTOC

Pae: if you are unaware, they are working to get Vista certification right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they are simply waiting for MS to finish a little bit of paperwork aka red tape so they can add logos etc to the website.

Bah, I don't like Vsita at all.

There's a program built in that allows Microsoft to delete any ill-gotten files (like downloaded music). I'd like to keep my data where it is, thank you very much.

Besides, most games aren't Vista compatible yet. They run, yes, but without support, don't expect anyone to care when something goes wrong.

i have a similar machine (hp pavilion dv6565ca, only difference is that i have a T5450 processor), and GW runs extremely well. i've yet to see it dip below 25 fps.

i've also tried it under compatibility mode. it didn't do anything, other than making my screen flicker during loading screens. fps and visuals are all the same.

I run GW in Vista on my Mac Pro. No issues at all. Vista runs well my man. Even early Vista ran well. I'm always maximizing and minimizing, going to window mode for Guild Wars Wiki, and everything runs like it should.

I have aero on and won't be needing to disable it for GW, that's for sure.

Oh, lol. 1 month old thread. I'm sure the issue's cleared up.

The support page is a little outdated. They did not support Vista while vista was in Beta (which ended in January). They do not support DirectX10, though vista also retains DX9 for compatibility with older games.

The only issue I've seen in using Vista DreamScenes (Ultimate only) and alt-Tabbing between the desktop and Guildwars while Areo is running. You can turn Areo off while a specific program is running via the shortcut properties. That is the only real complaints I've heard of. Of course, if you have 2-4GB of Ram (and on a new PC you'd better) then even that's not an issue.

I do recommend Vista for gaming if (and ONLY IF) you have a newer PC. If you bought it new in the last 18 months you're fine. Memory management is far superior to XP. While it does use more, it also gives more to the game. The result is a much smoother experience. Of course, if you only have 1GB of Ram, that won't cut it. But as you said, you're buying new, so nothing to worry about.

One thing to consider on a laptop... Get a DX10 compatible video card. They usually stick you with crappy integrated intel graphics chips in laptops. Pay the extra money, as there will be no easy upgrade for you when GuildWars 2 or another game comes out. Go all out on the video card and Memory. Save your self the trouble later.

Since it's already bumped, I guess that I'll conclude it. I haven't been having any problems at all, though I'm still trying to figure out why ctrl+space isn't calling the enemy anymore. There aren't any major issues; everything's running smoothly in Vista Home Premium without being in XP compatibility mode.

CTRL Space issue must be isolated. You should look into your settings.

guildwars seems to leave keys open for other applications to see, and sometimes they will take priority. theres a chance that ctrl-space is a shortcut on something else you have running. For me, ctrl-space was the default "hide msn messenger" key pattern, after i downloaded the messenger extension thing, msgpluslive. Ctrl space stopped working for me, and it took a while for me to realize that ctrl-space was working, just being intercepted by another program before guildwars saw it.

Yep, runs great on mine, better under Vista than under XP on the same machine too...

Constant 60FPs everywhere with Vista, under XP it sometimes dropped to 40/45 FPS for some unknown reason, but it doesn't happen under Vista for some reason

GW works on Vista without any compatibility mode. Windows is Windows, Vista is just a better version, so of course it runs GW just fine. Always going to have some people with any OS having isolated issues.
